Battery-powered game has nearly sold out after little more than a month, so Kansas Lottery plans more.
The Kansas Lottery's "pocket slots" game is approaching sellout after just five weeks of retail sales.
The battery-powered "Super 7's" instant-winner game "is flying off the shelves," said lottery director Ed Van Petten, and two more batches, including a poker-themed version, were ordered this week for sales through the end of the year.
Kansas last month became the second state to offer the high-tech game that, for $20, provides 80 spins of a tiny slot machine look-alike device about the size of credit card. Each game device is guaranteed to pay a prize of $3 to $500.
Each card can be played out through all 80 spins to reveal the total prize, or its bar code can be scanned by a participating lottery retailer and the card redeemed for its programmed value.
"We anticipated a positive response to the game, but the sales and positive feedback from our players have gone beyond our expectations," said Van Petten. Lottery officials said a second round of Super 7's sales is set for fall, and a poker game is expected to go on sale around Christmas.
Publicly traded Electronic Game Card Inc. developed the pioneering game device, which is marketed by Scientific Games Corp.
The Iowa Lottery test-marketed the game in 2004, and the MGM Grand Casino in Detroit earlier this month became the first casino to order the devices as a promotional gimmick.
"Kansas and Iowa have proven that the Electronic Game Card is the kind of innovative game that will catapult lotteries everywhere into the next generation of game play," said Steve Saferin, Scientific Games president.
Such a thing in a way exists already with the nj Slingo game, for example, where you go online and play Slingo to find out how much you won, but this one is self-contained. I'd have it so that it could keep playing indefinitely "for fun" after the 80 spins, that way you could give it to your grandkids or something. I'm guessing it's a dull little LCD screen or some such. $20 is expensive but if they had them in nj I would try it but only once.
