What a difference a day and six numbers makes.

On June 5, Revere resident Hector Diaz bought a Cash Windfall lottery ticket and less than 24 hours later he went in to claim his $1.46 million (minus taxes) winnings.

Diaz, who told lottery officials he did not want to speak with the media, purchased his ticket at Quick Mart, which is located at 22 Broadway in Revere.

Afonso Fonseca, who owns Quick Mart, said Diaz showed up at the store with the winning ticket.

"He told me he won and I checked his ticket. He really won. It was the largest winning ticket I ever saw," he said. "He's been a customer for a couple of months and is a nice guy. He really needed the money."

Because Diaz did not own a car, he asked Fonseca to drive him to the lottery office to claim his prize.

"I took him to get his money," he said. "After he got his money he asked me to drive him to a car dealer to buy a car.I drove him to the dealer and he spent $60,000 to buy a new car. He bought a 2007 Mercedes."

Fonseca, who has only been selling lottery tickets at his store for a couple of months, said he was shocked when he learned Diaz won.

"I didn't believe anyone could really win those things but now I do," he said.

The Quick Mart owner is not alone. He said lottery sales have increased 20 percent in his store since Diaz won the Cash WinFall game.

According to lottery officials, Diaz won the largest jackpot ever won in the Massachusetts Lottery's Cash WindFall game, which debuted in September 2004. Diaz, who was the sole winner, matched all six winning numbers (3-12-23-34-42-44) in the Monday, June 5th drawing to win the game's $1,461,286 jackpot. Since all Cash WinFall prizes are one-time lump sum payments, he received a check for the entire $1.46 million jackpot (less state and federal taxes).

According to Bresnahan, Quick Mart will receive a $14,612.86 commission for selling the winning ticket.

Good for him. Hopefully he puts some money in savings or something so he doesn't spend it or go through it too fast.

I tell you, a jackpot win is probably even more enraging in Cash Winfall than in any other. That win keeps an elusive $30 Match 3 prize that much farther.
