A Kentucky couple who bought five Powerball tickets after celebrating their 12th wedding anniversary got a surprise gift the next day.
Dwight and Jeanie Walton of Irvine found out they won $667,142 for matching five numbers but not the Powerball on one ticket during Saturday night's drawing.
Dwight Walton, a 35-year-old master electrician, said he realized Sunday morning he was holding a winning ticket.
"By the time I got to the fifth one, I had busted through the front door and was screaming, 'We won! We won! to anyone who'd listen," he said.
The money is part of the Match 5 Bonus Pool, with $200,000 for hitting on five numbers and an extra $467,142 in bonus money made up of $19.6 million excess prize funds for people who hit all but the Powerball.
The Waltons and their three children have been living with their in-laws while trying to finish building a house. He's done much of the work himself to save money.
Now, the Waltons said, they can finish the house.
The Waltons were one of 42 people across the country to match the five numbers, but not the Powerball, Kentucky Lottery officials said.
One person in Lincoln, Neb., matched all five numbers and the Powerball to claim the largest single jackpot in North American history, lottery officials said.
The winners came from my state. I think the guy has been building the house on his own for 3 yrs in order to save money. In the meantime, the family has been living with in-laws while the house is being finished. Three years seems an awful long time to wait for a house to be built IMO but I guess they are very lucky they won so they can finally finish the house (what their plan is) and perhaps get some help to build it.
I know a guy in Maryland, outside of DC, who lived in a mobile home while he and his family built their house. Took five years. In the end, completely paid off, and done 100% correct. No union labor involved! House will last hundreds of years. One of the best houses I've ever seen. Dual use fireplaces throughout.
The Waltons - COOL! Some one should make a television series about a family with that name.
