Maryland Lottery to end Lotto game

Maryland Lottery

The Maryland State Lottery Agency recently announced that the current Lotto game will soon come to an end.  The final drawing will take place on February 1, 2006.

Since it began in 1983, Lotto has generated over $1 billion in cash prizes and has produced a total of 622 millionaires over a 23-year span.

To replace the current Lotto game, the Lottery will launch Multi-Match.

Since the introduction of the Big Game in 1996, Lotto sales have declined.  Based on extensive player research, the Lottery has implemented a new game with features that reflect players' preferences.

"We talk with our players all of the time and what they've been asking for are better odds, more prizes and a more interesting way to play," said Lottery Director Buddy Roogow.  "Multi Match does just that.  Now, for the first time ever, players are able to win by mixing and matching different sets of numbers from different lines."

PA Match 6?

I'm dissapointed. They are making a really bad move. From 2 plays for $1, you now get 1 play for $2. In a way, the price is quadrupling.

There's more info here.

This is going to be a 6/43 game, BTW, and the odds of winning on the page are a bit flawed. The single line odds are for a single line, and not for all three.

The only problem I have with these Match-6 type games is that the jackpots seem to have a difficult time increasing due to the fact that so many secondary prizes are payed out.

For people like me, we play for the jackpot, not the secondary prizes.  Personally, I wish they would just stay with the classic Pick-6 games, and keep the matrix somewhere between 42 and 49 numbers.

The goal of many people is to win a jackpot of at least a million dollars, which would be roughly an annuity of between $2.5 and $3 million.  If the Pick-6 (or Match-6) game doesn't at least average this amount for its jackpots, then I think the game should be changed to make sure that it does.

Just my opinion.

all the details of this new game arent posted yet so until i see how the pot will increase i'll hold my breath. The fact is Maryland has mega and people have been complaining about Classic Lotto. lotto pots take forever to grow and even longer between wins. People flock to play mega not Lotto. This new game might draw more players than the Classic Lotto drawing.

Maryland Lotto has been an old friend of mine for many years.  It pre-dates all of the big multi-state jackpot games - but its time is past.  I'm looking forward to a new game.

Sounds like a trend started with the scratch offs.  Increase the cost, with minimum increase in prize.  The Lottery Directors obvious talk to each other.

That is bad. With Wild Card 2 you get 2 plays for a buck also, but if they changed the format to 1 play for 2 bucks I would quit playing.

PA has been getting away with for a long time.  The gambler tends to gamble.

Since I play both PA Match 6 and the MD lotto, it will be interesting to see how they fair in hits and turnovers.

MD 's Lotto really did let you have more plays per dollar , so your buck went further. The problem was and will continue to be their greediness in payouts and state taxing wins. Since the Lotto has been rolling for awhile I wouldnt be surprized if the thing doesnt hit til February of 2006 anyways! Maybe it will hit 3 million by that time...

The current Maryland Lotto is ALL cash (less 25% federal less 7.5% state tax). THe new Match6 style lottery is yet to be announced for payout options. They have the pay table for review. JimmySand response was correct based on the current Lotto.

People are asking for games that have more frequent prizes.  A game that gives very little positive feedback is not going to encourage people to play on a repeat basis, such as a subscription.  The people that wait it out for the large prizes are just as likely or moreso to play Mega Millions.
