UK National Lottery operator Camelot is to launch a branded card that will enable shoppers to pay for lottery tickets at checkouts in thousands of retailers nationwide. The card, part of the National Lottery Fast Pay plan, will initially be rolled out to more than 1,000 Tesco stores by the end of the year.
Other supermarkets, including Sainsbury's and Asda, are in talks with Camelot about adopting the system, which is designed to make playing its portfolio of games easier.
Players fill out a draw slip in the normal way. It is read by a lottery terminal and players are given a Fast Pay card containing their selection in a plastic wallet, which can be used at the checkout. Players can only pay at Lottery terminals at present.
The plan comes as Camelot revealed an increase in its sales figures on Monday to £4.76bn for the year to 31 March, up more than £150m on the previous year's £4.61bn. This will lead to an increased marketing budget under National Lottery Commission regulations.
Separately, Camelot confirmed that Dianne Thompson is remaining as chief executive, after speculation that she was to step down, and that it plans to apply for its third lottery licence when bidding begins in 2007.
