Court Also Rules in Favor of Mega Millions Lottery Game
New York's highest court has given the go-ahead for video lottery terminals.
The Court of Appeals on Tuesday ruled VLT's are not slot machines, and therefore are legal. The ruling also says a portion of the revenue from the terminals can go to the horse racing industry, since the machines operate at tracks.
Opponents had sued, saying lottery proceeds were state-mandated to go to education funding.
VLT's were approved by lawmakers to bring more revenue to the state following 9/11. There are plans to bring the machines to the Aqueduct Raceway in Queens and Yonkers Raceway.
In two other rulings involving gambling, the high court also ruled in favor of building six new Indian-run casinos on reservations in the Catskills, and the justices said the state can continue taking part in the Mega Millions multi-state lottery.
