North Carolina Lottery

A North Carolina Senate committee commissioned to take up the House's lottery bill approved two weeks ago will meet this week for the first time.

The Senate Select Committee on the Lottery Bill will review the measure narrowly passed by the House. The measure would dedicate half of the gambling's net revenues to school construction.

Another 25 percent would create need-based college scholarships, with the rest going to a special education fund controlled by the General Assembly -- possibly to assist with Governor Mike Easley's class-size reduction and preschool initiatives.

Easley and Black lobbied House members hard to get a lottery bill approved by a vote of 61-to-59 on April sixth. The pair talked up an estimated $300 million that the state could recoup from lotteries in surrounding states that are played by North Carolina residents.

North Carolina should come out of the dark ages. NC money has gone to support other states for way too long. It's time for other states to help support NC. A lottery has nothing to do with politics, religion, sex, nationality, heritage, or who is for or who is against a lottery. A lottery has nothing to do with taxes on cigarettes, advertising a lottery, or whether it is a good way to raise money for the state.  It is about raising money for the state of NC and it's school systems.  In Beaufort County, the schools are bare of all their daily needs. They beg parents to send paper, pencils, tissue, soap, used books, toys, clothes, VOLUNTEERS, snacks, treats and the list goes on. A lottery would provide a means for the schools to buy these items plus hire much needed teachers and other staff to operate and maintain the schools. I drive a truck and make numerous deliveries to schools in NC. It is not the truck drivers job to unload the freight at the any location. Lots of times at a school, the custodian will get the principle to round up a bunch of kids (get them out of class) to help unload the truck because they do not have enough help. A lottery would put a lot of people back to work in a lot of counties across NC. Retail stores would hire more people. More retail locations would pop up. That would be extra taxes collected for NC. A lottery only makes good sense for NC. If you oppose a lottery, simply do not play the lottery. Don't hold North Carolina in the dark ages any more. Let her grow and be a contributing part of the USA.
