Tennessee Governor Bredesen plans to funnel some lottery money into his preschool education initiative when he unveils his budget to lawmakers in the coming weeks.

Bredesen has made a statewide pre-kindergarten program one of his top priorities for the year.

There had been speculation that lottery money would eventually pay for the program with a final price tag of hundreds of millions of dollars.

The governor told The Associated Press that he will propose using lottery money in the fiscal year beginning July first to get the ball rolling on a program he said has proven to help children.

He declined to give a specific amount.

The voluntary preschool program would prep four-year-olds for their elementary education. Eventually Bredesen wants to make it a guaranteed portion of the state's education funding formula.
